The Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) is a religious congregation that has worked in Tanzania since 2011 to combat human trafficking through rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration efforts. Over the years, DMI has operated a short-stay home and a vocational rehabilitation center, successfully reintegrating over 840 trafficked girls. After reintegration, many join Alumni Associations established in six Tanzanian regions, including Dar es Salaam, allowing them to maintain social ties, receive ongoing support, and participate in leadership trainings.
While 60% of DMI alumni have found entry-level jobs, fewer than 5% have launched small businesses—often due to lack of capital, business knowledge, and mentorship. Many of those who attempted entrepreneurship experienced a 40% failure rate, citing poor market understanding, inadequate record-keeping, and blurred lines between business and personal spending.
To address these gaps, DMI proposes the creation of an Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) specifically designed for alumni in Dar es Salaam. The center will offer:
